Construction Quality Week 2020

The Construction Quality Management (CQM) Community celebrated the Construction Quality Week 2020 (#CQW2020) on its first anniversary on November 20, 2020.

In the CQW2020, we had a blast of Quality Talks with Quality Professionals from National and International expertise on various topics and concluded that for a successful Quality Program, a proper Quality Culture is needed within an organization.

The components of a successful Quality Program are:

  • Quality Culture: Develop your Philosophy, Methodology, and Processes
  • Integration: Holistic approach integrated in all aspects through Quality PMO
  • Experience: The right experience in the right direction and collect Lessons
  • Education: Proper Training to “sharpen the saw” and learn best practices
  • Recognition: Drive-out Fear by promoting, recognizing, and rewarding Quality Efforts
  • Network: Promote Quality Excellence and Collaborate with like-minded professionals

All these components are essential but you cannot establish an environment of trust and teamwork in a learning organization without proper Quality Culture that promotes and rewards finding issues and continuously improving without driving out fear by encouraging involvement and collaboration.

Building Blocks of creating the correct Quality Culture:

  • Define and outline Values
  • Train team members in Quality Expectations
  • Design the proper size QMS and establish a Quality PMO
  • Perform Knowledge Management and share Best Practices & Lessons
  • Communicate clearly & seek feedback regularly
  • Drive out fear through Recognition Programs and rewarding quality efforts

Finally, to put all these components together and fit all the best practices in a customized methodology for your organization, a Quality Project Management Office (QPMO) will be the best vehicle to transform your Quality Program.

Functions and Benefits of a Quality PMO:

  • Set Strategic Plans and direct tactics
  • Develop Standards, Methodologies, and Processes
  • Organizational Change Management
  • Integrated Project Delivery Management
  • Administration and Support
  • Knowledge Management & Collect Lessons
  • Talent Management & Training
  • Recognize & Reward Quality Efforts

The summary of the discussions was presented by Dr. Emari, and is available below:

Then the community gathered for an hour on Friday, November 20, 2020, to network and see each other in a live face to face meeting. Zoom platform was used to video conference and share thoughts. The complete discussion was live on CQM YouTube Channel. Subscribe to the channel to get notifications for future live events. The video is currently available at the end of the YouTube CQW2020 Playlist on CQM Channel: https://cqm.us/tvs

It was concluded that we should invite more members from the Owner type organizations as well as the Architectural firms interested in improving the status of Construction Quality. In addition, members requested that this must be an ongoing effort throughout the year, so meeting once a year for Construction Quality Week is not enough. Although PMIGL CQM Meetings are on a quarterly basis, participation from other PMI Chapters will increase the frequency of the meetings.
